The Cellar Restaurant was originally known as The Old Black Bull. Dating back to around 1650 the building is reputed to be the oldest building in Padiham. The building holds interesting features including mullion windows, stone fireplaces and wooden beams along with an original outside wall now the main structure inside the restaurant. Central to the restaurants charm is the arched vaulted stone ceiling in the dining room reminiscent of a beer or wine cellar.

 

Sitting in the shadows of the local church for centuries, The Old Black Bull has catered for many local inhabitants and also travellers throughout the years. Listed in various historical records, The Old Black Bull may well have been visited by Oliver Cromwell as he passed through in the 17th century. The Old Black Bull was closed by Massey Brewery in 1938 to make way for a new modern pub called The Shakespeare. Since then the building has had various uses including office space for Houston & Forbes Architects. Finally in 1980 it was refurbished and opened as The Cellar restaurant by Mr & Mrs Clarke.

 

We purchased The Cellar from the Clarkes in November 1992 and have been here ever since. We now have a dedicated nucleus of staff that has joined the 'cellar family'. Our three key members of staff being chefs Sam and Keiran and restaurant manager Bekki who are always close to hand in our absence.
